My 5 year old, the future urban scholar

At dinner earlier this week, I had the following conversation with Micah:

M: "Daddy, what are you studying in Geography?"
J: "Oh, lots of stuff. I have to write a paper next week."
M: "And how about your research on cities?"
J (surprised he remembers): "Yeah, I'm still reading about those."
M: "And daddy, have you studied City Legos yet?" (Note: City is one of lego's current theme sets)
J: "Not yet--what do you think I could study?"
M: "Maybe cars and trucks and stuff."
J: "You mean like transportation? Yes--lots of people study that. What else?"
(pause)
M: "Maybe the people?"
J: "Like the different jobs people have?"
M: "Yeah."
J: "That sounds like a good idea."

I'll trade you Foucault for Weber and throw in an unsolved homicide for good measure

When I was a kid, the only trading cards I dealt in were Garbage Pail Kids. Those things were cool! But now that I'm a grown-up intellectual, it's time to start trading the big stuff. Enter, Theory Trading Cards from Theory.org.uk. These handy little summaries may be one of the best (and nerdiest) take-aways from my Sociological Theory class this fall. Thanks, Joe!

It seems that social theory buffs aren't the only ones using cards to further their goals. As a frequent visitor to the Minnesota Department of Corrections website, I've discovered that the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has launched a new playing card initiative to try and help solve cold cases. Peruse the Cold Case Playing Cards online and maybe just help bring some long overdue justice...
